How to participate in Earth Day this year

Today marks the 51st Earth Day. Given the past year we’ve had, we can all agree that we need to take better care of our planet— now more than ever. In the last 12 months, we have simultaneously experienced four crises: a raging global pandemic, a looming economic recession, a global warming disaster, and one of the most significant collective movements against racial injustice — a lot has happened, and all these events are connected. With every orbit around the sun, the need for us to take action as a unit becomes greater.

Here at Wunderdogs, we believe it is our duty to use our platform to spear on the good cause of saving the Earth, which is our home. We have gathered the below tips and information approved by EARTHDAY.ORG on how to participate in Earth Day this year, as well as what else you can do to help save the planet every other day.

What is Earth Day?

First organized in 1970, Earth Day was set up to raise awareness to the general public about the state of the planet, the dangers of climate change, and the causes and solutions to the world’s biggest problem. By 1990 Earth Day had become a global movement and today is recognized by over a billion people worldwide.

What is this year’s theme?

This year’s theme is “Restore our Earth,” which focuses on natural processes, emerging green technologies, and innovative thinking to restore the world’s ecosystems.

How can you participate in Earth Day?

EARTHDAY.ORG has curated an Earth Day Action Toolkit complete with critical messaging, graphics, and resources for you to share on social media and your immediate networks, projects, and motives to take up in your communities, and essential information on their key campaigns. Some initiatives you can organize under the campaign include organizing a teach-in to educate people on climate change and organizing a clean-up to help tackle land and sea pollution. You can also stream Earth Day Live, a 3-day live-streamed summit that will include panel discussions, workshops, and a series of guest appearances. Finally, you can follow EARTHDAY.ORG on Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, and Twitch for regular updates.

What else can we do to help the planet?

Outside of World Earth Day, here are a few ways to help the planet in your daily life:

  1. Be more conscious about what you buy, especially in fashion
  2. Switch to renewable energy where possible
  3. Travel less by flying
  4. Write to your local member of parliament or community representative about the importance of conserving natural resources and the environment
  5. Donate to verified environmental charities
  6. Start or join local campaigns and initiatives like the cleanups and teach-ins done on Earth Day.
